5 Beautiful Things - February 2024
- A late night drive home from book club. Two deer standing in the woods, just off the side of the road.
- The sun warming my back. A high pitched trill of birds chirping in a nearby tree. Drawing a cup of broccoli cheddar soup into my hands for warmth. The shadow of its steam, an apparition on the table in front of me. Winter disguising itself as Spring.
- A clear, starry sky, at only 6:30 p.m. The Big Dipper directly above me.
- The shadow of my hand opening the back door as the sun rises. The movement on the wall as the cold air rushed in. Faint shadows swirling up like steam rising from a kettle. Almost like when you put your feet at the edge of the ocean and the ripples gloss over them as the waves crash and recede. The wavy lines of a glittering pool. The way the movement disappeared as soon as the door was shut, as if was the shadow of invisible air passing through.
- Children singing a best friend song, dancing in their formal wear in the school gymnasium on Valentine’s Day.
